Learner and Tutor Agreements

Upon joining the Peel Literacy Guild, as either a learner or a tutor you will be asked to sign an agreement. This agreement outlines the commitment you are going to make to the guild and the commitment the guild will make to you.

Learner Agreement

I Will:

  1. Come to lessons on time every week.
  2. Come to lessons with my homework done.
  3. Treat others at the Learning Centre with respect.
  4. Return library books within four weeks or ask for extra time.
  5. Let my tutor or group leader know as early as possible when I can not make it to my lesson.
  6. Tell the staff at the Learning Centre if my telephone and/or address changes.
  7. Tell my co-ordinator if I am not happy with my lessons.
The Peel Literacy Guild Will:
  1. Use my personal information for statistical purposes required by the Guild and its funders.
  2. Make sure that there will be up-to-date books and materials.
  3. Make sure that the Learning Centre is safe, comfortable and accessible.
  4. Tell me about meetings and workshops.
  5. Give me the chance to have a voice as to how the Guild is run.
My Co-ordinator will:
  1. Give me a training plan based on my goals.
  2. Tell me about other classes that might meet my needs.
  3. Work with me and my tutor to monitor, support and evaluate my progress.
  4. Respect and treat me as an adult learner.
I Understand That:
  1. If I miss 3 classes without letting the staff or my tutor know beforehand,I will be asked to leave the program.
  2. If I miss over 25% of my classes before my review date, I may be asked to leave the program.

I know that my placement in the literacy program will be reviewed, if I do not keep this agreement. My co-ordinator and I will review my progress every 6 months.

Learner Agreement for Daily Classes

I Will:

  2. Come to lessons with my homework done.
  3. Treat my classmates, instructor, and others at the Learning Centre with respect.
  4. Return library books within four weeks or ask for extra time.
  5. Let my instructor know as early as possible when I can not make it to my lesson.
  6. Tell my instructor if my telephone and/or address changes.
  7. Tell my instructor if I am not happy with my lessons.
  8. Come to orientation classes.
  9. Make up work I missed for homework if I am absent.
The Peel Literacy Guild Will:
  1. Will not give anyone my information without my permission, except when required by law.
  2. Make sure that there will be up-to-date books and materials.
  3. Make sure that the Learning Centre is safe, comfortable and accessible.
  4. Tell me about meetings and workshops.
  5. Give me the chance to have a voice as to how the Guild is run.
  6. Let me see my file whenever I wish.
My Co-ordinator will:
  1. Give me a training plan based on my goals.
  2. Tell me about other classes that might meet my needs.
  3. Work with me to monitor, support and evaluate my progress.
  4. Respect and treat me as an adult learner.

Tutor Agreement

I Will:
  1. Meet with a learner weekly for at least 12 months.
  2. Prepare lessons based on my learner's training plan.
  3. Come to lessons prepared and on time.
  4. Communicate with the co-ordinator on the progress, demonstrations, changes &/or concerns relating to the learner's training plans and goals.
  5. Return library materials (in good condition) within four weeks or request an extension.
  6. Telephone the Learning Centre & my learner when I know that I can not make it to my lesson.
  7. Inform the staff at the Learning Centre if my telephone number &/or address changes.
  8. Attend professional development opportunities whenever possible and/or appropriate.
  9. Advise my Co-ordinator (right away) if there are significant concerns with my learner.
  10. Book, cancel and re-schedule tutoring space as early as possible.

  12. Treat others at the Learning Centre with respect.
The Peel Literacy Guild Will:
  1. Provide a good environment for volunteering.
  2. Keep my personal information only for statistical purposes required by the Guild and its funders and allow me access to my file whenever I wish.
  3. Make sure that there will be up-to-date books and materials.
  4. Provide the necessary training for me.
  5. Make sure that the Learning Centre is safe, comfortable and accessible.
  6. Inform me about meetings, workshops (professional development) that I can attend.
  7. Provide an opportunity for me to have a voice as to how the Guild is operated.
My Co-ordinator will:
  1. Provide me with a training plan based on my learner's goals\
  2. Be available to help me and my learner develop lesson plans based on those goals.
  3. Provide information about current materials, courses etc. appropriate for me and my learner.
  4. Work with me and my learner to monitor, support and evaluate my learner's progress towards the goals as identified in the training plan.
  5. Treat me with respect

I will keep confidential all information or data received in relation to my volunteer position. In addition, I agree that I will not, directly or indirectly, use or disclose information without receiving prior consent from the Peel Literacy Guild staff.

If I do not follow the above conditions, I am aware that my volunteer assignment will be reviewed. I know that my learner's goals and progress will be evaluated at 6 month intervals.
